Hello Ottawa, Canada!
Just over 6 months ago, I left Barbados and immigrated to Canada. Everyone I’ve spoken with about this move asks the same question: WHY??! Why would I leave the sunny island paradise of Barbados to come to the bitter winters and sweltering summers of Ottawa?
My response is that I’ve always wanted to live and work in a big city. I wanted to experience and dress for all four seasons (I always knew fall was my favourite!). I wanted to take the train, go for brunches and lounge in coffee shops, and meet a vastly diverse group of people I can learn from.
The next question is always “Why Ottawa?” and to that I blank. There was no special reason or pull to the capital city of Canada for me. It was down to affordability and standing out uniquely from the masses of other applicants. I knew one friend who lived there and at the time and my sister was living a 2hr train ride away in Montreal with her husband – she then moved to London, Ontario on the same day I moved to Ottawa and is now an 8hr train ride away.
So far, my experience in Ottawa has met all my expectations. Before moving to Ottawa I had visited my sister in Montreal twice and only made connections through Toronto. That said, I have all of Canada to explore and I hope I can share it all here.
